Hans Christian Ørsted (HCØ) was born in Rudkøbing on 14. August 1777. His father was a chemist. He had also a brother called Anders Sandøe. HCØ worked with his father, when he was elleven years old. He worked with chemistry.

In 1794 went the two brothers travelled to Copenhagen. They passed their High-school certificate in the same year. HCØ wanted to study philosophy, poetry and chemistry. He was very interested in chemistry and physics. He made some small experiments and he got many prizes.

One day he decided to travel. He wanted to be famous such as the biggest chemists and physicists in the world. He was in Germany and France. That was from 1801-1804. In 1805 got he made many experiments. People wanted to see his work.

In 1802 he travelled again to Germany and made the book called “Ansichten der chemischen naturgesetze. 1820 was a very nice year for HCØ. Now was he famous because of the results from his experiments. Electromagnetism was the topic.

Hans Christian Andersen was important for the young author and scientists. HCA got help from HCØ. HCA called him father. It was a long friendship. HCØ had sympathy with the writer from Odense(HCA). HCØ came also from the provinces to Copenhagen without money and friends. He felt it was very sad for Hans Christian Andersen. HCA felt respect for the clever man from Rudkøbing. HCØ died in 9.3.1851.
